Human not present: autonomous payments and their limit
Last updated: · Leutrim Miftaraj
With AP2 v0.2, agents may execute payments autonomously — based on pre-authorised instructions, without the human being present at the moment of the transaction. This is the moment at which payment authorisation effectively becomes delegation of action.
The shift
«Buy the tickets as soon as they appear» is no longer a payment but an instruction with conditions — exactly the structure of a mandate: scope, limits, time window, revocation. The payments world is discovering the mandate problem from its own side.
What is missing
Pre-authorisation without legal wording, without a state identity root and without two-sided evidence does not resolve the dispute: who proves what «pre-authorised» covered exactly — and that it had not been revoked?
Consequence
The more autonomous the payment, the more valuable the mandate layer above it: it supplies the limits (frequency, geography, time), the escalation and the proof that make human-not-present acceptable in the first place.
Key takeaway
Human not present is the strongest argument for mandates the payments industry has ever delivered.
