Stripe for agents: ACP, Shared Payment Tokens, MPP
Last updated: · Leutrim Miftaraj
Stripe occupies the developer layer of agentic commerce: the Agentic Commerce Protocol developed with OpenAI, Shared Payment Tokens (merchant- and amount-bound, time-limited, single-use) and the Machine Payments Protocol — shipped as GA, with Klarna and Affirm rolling out.
Strength
Lowest integration friction: anyone on Stripe becomes agent-ready with a few lines — including scoped virtual cards via Stripe Issuing for agent-owned budgets.
Limit
Account-bound payment convenience: the question of the legal person behind the agent, of non-payment actions and of conclusive proof stays outside the model.
Integration
Verify before the SPT: the mandate decides (with an MD primary code on rejection), the token executes. For Stripe merchants this is a configuration step, not a rebuild — drop-in middleware included.
Key takeaway
Stripe is an integration target, not a competitor: revenue and clarity of liability no longer exclude each other.
