Visa TAP and Mastercard Agent Pay compared

Last updated: ·

Both card networks rolled out agent frameworks in 2025/26: Visa with the Trusted Agent Protocol (verified agent ID plus issuer-signed consent), Mastercard with Agentic Tokens (an MDES extension bound to agent, merchant scope and policy) — available to all US cardholders since November 2025, with a global rollout.

What they solve

Distinguishing legitimate agents from bots at checkout and binding tokens securely — in early 2026 the first live end-to-end agent payment ran in Europe (Santander/Mastercard). Card rails are agent-ready.

What they do not solve

Both are card-bound and payment-focused: no cancellations, no data releases, no actions towards authorities, no legal wording of the mandate, no two-sided evidence chain outside the network.

Coexistence

In the mandate model, network credentials are the execution layer: the mandate permits the action, the agentic token executes the payment. Merchants combine both without an architectural conflict.

Key takeaway

The networks have won the payment. The action is still up for grabs.
