eIDAS & E-ID
The state identity root: why it changes everything and how to connect to it.
The Swiss E-ID: swiyu, trust infrastructure from H1 2027
After the popular vote of 28 September 2025, the Federal Office of Justice adjusted the timetable on 30 June 2026: the trust infrastructure (base and trust registry, issuer/verifier) is to go live in the first half of 2027; for the E-ID itself there is no date yet, for security reasons (defence against deepfakes and malware). Voluntary, free of charge, in the state-run swiyu app, with data held only on the device and selective disclosure as a core principle.
The EUDI wallet: deadlines, reality, consequences
The eIDAS 2.0 deadline stands: by 24 December 2026 every member state must offer at least one certified wallet — yet fewer than a third currently meet the readiness benchmark. Germany plans its state wallet for 2 January 2027; the acceptance obligation for regulated sectors follows by November 2027.
LoA substantial vs. high: assurance levels in practice
eIDAS defines levels of assurance: substantial and high differ in how strongly the identity was verified. For mandates this is not a formality — it is the dial with which verifiers steer their risk.
Selective disclosure: data protection as architecture
Selective disclosure means: for every action the agent discloses only the claims that action needs — not the whole identity. SD-JWT makes this cryptographically possible; the E-ID makes it the standard; the mandate makes it mandatory.
Qualified timestamps: evidentiary value under Art. 41 eIDAS
A qualified electronic timestamp enjoys the legal presumption of accuracy of the date and integrity of the data (Art. 41 eIDAS) — the strongest evidentiary position electronic evidence can reach.
