The EUDI wallet: deadlines, reality, consequences
Last updated: · Leutrim Miftaraj
The eIDAS 2.0 deadline stands: by 24 December 2026 every member state must offer at least one certified wallet — yet fewer than a third currently meet the readiness benchmark. Germany plans its state wallet for 2 January 2027; the acceptance obligation for regulated sectors follows by November 2027.
Fixed regulation, moving reality
The German sandbox (115 organisations, 150 use cases) shows: the bottleneck is relying-party onboarding, not wallet technology. Whoever builds verify infrastructure today is ready on the acceptance date — whoever waits integrates under time pressure in 2027.
The business case
Wallet-based onboarding cuts identification costs from 70–100 euros to 3–8 euros per case — compliance becomes ROI. The same mechanics apply to mandates: verified authority instead of manual power-of-attorney administration.
An honest roadmap
Until the national wallets are in production, the identity anchor runs via video ident and organisational registers; the wallet connector (OID4VCI/VP) is prepared. Roadmaps with dates beat features with asterisks.
Key takeaway
The EUDI deadline is not a risk but a calendar: if you build on the wallet stack, regulation delivers the adoption.
